Super Girls LP Set

I love yard sales! This weekend Jason scored this 3 LP compilation for a dollar! It's called Super Girls and features some of the best 1960's girl groups.  It was put out by Warner Special Products in 1979. I believe they re-released this compliation as a four LP set at some point as well. 

There are songs from: Shangri Las, Martha and The Vandellas, The Cookies, Mary Wells, The Essex, Raindrops, Marcie Blaine, Murmaids, Earl Jean, Orlons, Chordetttes, Diane Renay, Skeeter Davis, The Supremes, The Marvelettes, Shirley Ellis, Dixie Cups, Barbara Lewis, Shelley Fabares, Chiffons, Peggy March, Jelly Beans, Betty Everett, Little Eva, Dee Dee Sharp, Claudine Clark, Brenda Lee, Robin Ward.

If you see this, it is definitely worth checking out!

     

60's Girl Group Garage Sound

While I am all about buying vinyl and supporting record stores, I do have to confess something here. I got my first i-pod last year and I can't believe I waited that long to get one! (I'm always resistant to new technology when it comes out, I was the same way with DVD's haha)

But I must share this gem. I recently downloaded "Shangri-Las & the '60s Girl Group Garage Sound" which includes 70 tracks and is 171 minutes of music! If you are interested in 60's girl groups (this is one genre I want to learn more about) this seems like a good place to start.

You probably know some of these songs, from when the oldies station used to actually play oldies! Here are a few of my favorite tracks are:

• It's all right, Merrilee & the Turnabouts
• Big boss man, Shirley (Shirley has a bluesy beautiful voice!)
• Only seventeen, The Beatle-ettes (sort of reminds me of the donnas)
• You don't love me, The Starlets
• Tame Me Tiger, Bonnie St. Clair (my favorite song on this record - "my nails are long, cut them off, tame me, tiger")
• That's no way to spend my time, Pen-etts
• 7 heures du matin, Jacqueline Taieb (I also like the English translation on "girls in the garage" by Romulan)
• Skateboard song, Norma Tracy and Cinderella Kids (reminds me of Annie)
• My baby has gone away, Little Miss Jessie and group
• Melvin, the Belles
• Everyone loves to rock n roll, the Candletts (makes me wanna dance)
• Sock it to me, Judy Carne (Austin Powers-ish)

it's also interesting to look at societal values (and how things have -or have not changed) based on lyrics in popular music over time... thoughts?

Welcome to Grrrl Sounds!

Years ago I used to have a zine called Frosting on the Cake Lady. I LOVED writing this zine, and had a lot of empowering experiences self-publishing it (including interview Kathleen Hanna.) So, for many reasons, I decided to start this blog. I have hopes for it to evolve into a website, community etc. and would love your help!

This blog will be dedicated to grrrl's who rock, with a primary focus on indie, garage and punk music. I know it looks dull now but I have hope that it will evolve into something greater. I'd love for this site to be interactive and to have guest bloggers, as my knowledge is not comprehensive. So if you have graphic design knowledge, relevant news, record or concert reviews or any ideas please get in touch!

Basically, I'd love to share music with you and have you share music with me. I love female fronted bands, and it's sometimes hard to find stuff, cos a lot of it is obscure. I will be sharing information on a variety of bands, old and new from Bikini Kill to The Trashwomen to Thee Headcoatees to Girlschool to the Shangri-Las.
