Hey Boston!

Vivian Girls are playing tomorrow night at Great Scott in Allston and Dum Dum Girls are playing the Paradise on April 1.  And this is a tough one to choose but on March 25 The Donnas are playing the Paradise, and the Black Lips are playing the Middle East.   I have clinical that night so I don't even know if I'll make it to either show but where will you be?  Let me know if you can do a write up about The Donnas shows. Or if you're in another city and can do a review about another grrrly show..xo

      

         

The Downbeat 5, Dum Dum Girls and King Khan and BBQ Show

Thursday I went to the Downbeat 5, Dum Dum Girls and King Khan & BBQ Show at The Middle East.  The Downbeat 5 are a Boston garage rock band who JJ Rassler (of DMZ and The Queers) formed a decade ago.  The group is fronted by Jen D'Angora, whose amazing vocals ranged from cooing sweetly and softly at times, to fiercly howling.  At some points her voice reminded me of Mia Zapata.  They played a great set.

The Dum Dum Girls, who recently signed to Sub Pop, played next.  Their eight song set was scribbled on a cocktail napkin and included an amazing version of GG Allin's Don't Talk to Me and ended (too quickly!) with Jail La La.  They were tight, fuzzy, lo-fi, magical, distorted amazingness.  I was already excited to see them live, but I love them even more now!  The current lineup included Dee Dee from Grande Ole Party, Jules, Bambi, and Frankie Rose. Frankie was in The Vivian Girls and Crystal Stilts, but she recently started Frankie and the Outs, who you have to check out or I can't be your friend.

I took videos but still cannot figure out how to transfer them from the iphone to the computer (any help on this would be greatly appreciated.)  Also, stay tuned for an interview with the Dum Dum Girls soon! And let me know if you have any questions for these fabulous ladies.

I've lost count how many times I've seen King Khan & BBQ Show, but as always they put on an amazing, energetic, humorous set. A highlight was a cover of Johnny Thunders You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory. This duo is one of my favorite live bands! Last time I saw them I had just broken my toe, so I had much more fun this time around.

I love The King Khan and BBQ Show and when I heard they were coming to town, I was excited because they put on such a great show.  Then I realized the Dum Dum Girls were opening up and I was super psyched!
