NYU Archives "The Kathleen Hanna Papers"
You may remember that Johanna Fateman and Kathleen Hanna talked about their plans to donate their zines to NYU on Hannah Neurotica's Blog Talk Radio Show (if you missed it, you can listen here!) Well, according to The L Magazine, NYU's Fales Library has recently acquired The Kathleen Hanna Papers. Who wants to take a road trip? Hannah..? Anyone..? I know Jason will not really be into this trip, with me spending countless hours geeking out at the library and all. Let me know, cos I'm serious.

Lusting After Norwich with The Brownies
The Brownies are BFF's that started a band in high school and have been together for five years. Their guitarist Nathan Pounds recently left the band. The lineup is currently Soaphie, Stevie, Michael J. Sheils and Maxie. Their debut album, Ourknife Yourback, came out on my birthday (June 22!) and is available on Amazon, Play.com and Itunes. They released 250 copies of the Means to an End blue 7" on NRONE Records and it sold out (so did the CD single!) You can get the Cougar 7" or CD single through NRONE Records.
Maxie does a really great zine called Gravy about Norwich bands. I like it because she tries to be positive and celebratory (that is kinda my philosphy on Grrrl Sounds too.) I got a lot of great info on the scene there through her zine. If you want to get a hold of the zine yourself, contact the Gravy Myspace. Every issue talks about local bands and has a theme running through with some short stories and art. The first issue theme is loss, second issue's focus is mixtapes, third issue is focused on heavy music and Norwich grrrl bands, and the fourth issue is about tweeOff!

Grrrl Zines
I miss swapping zines and mix tapes in the mail. As a kid this is how I conquered the isolation of being a suburban punk. And this is also how I found out about so many cool bands, many of which I still love today! I think while I'm feeling nostalgic about this, I'm going to try to dig up copies of my old zine and try to find some new pen pals. A new book, Girl Zines: Making Media, Doing Feminism by Alison Piepmeier, is set to be released on November 18th. Here is a review of the book from The American Prospect.

And if you want to learn how to make a zine yourself, one of my favorite authors of all time, Francesca Lia Block, contributed to the book Zine Scene: The Do it Yourself Guide to Zines with Hilary Carlip.

And if you're interested in reading more about grrrl zines, I can recommend the book: Girls Guide to Taking Over the World: Writings From The Girl Zine Revolution by Tristan Taormino and Karen Green.

Getting Close to Nothing - Sister George
There was a UK video zine documentary put out in 1994 called "Getting Close To Nothing." But the question is, where can I get a coy of this video?!?
Here's a clip of Sister George. I don't know a lot about this band, but would like to learn and hear more. Do you know anything about them?

Welcome to Grrrl Sounds!
Years ago I used to have a zine called Frosting on the Cake Lady. I LOVED writing this zine, and had a lot of empowering experiences self-publishing it (including interview Kathleen Hanna.) So, for many reasons, I decided to start this blog. I have hopes for it to evolve into a website, community etc. and would love your help!
This blog will be dedicated to grrrl's who rock, with a primary focus on indie, garage and punk music. I know it looks dull now but I have hope that it will evolve into something greater. I'd love for this site to be interactive and to have guest bloggers, as my knowledge is not comprehensive. So if you have graphic design knowledge, relevant news, record or concert reviews or any ideas please get in touch!
Basically, I'd love to share music with you and have you share music with me. I love female fronted bands, and it's sometimes hard to find stuff, cos a lot of it is obscure. I will be sharing information on a variety of bands, old and new from Bikini Kill to The Trashwomen to Thee Headcoatees to Girlschool to the Shangri-Las.
