Okay, it's true, I'm kind of obsessed with turntable.fm. I have listened to so many great songs it is ridiculous. In essence, it is a website where you can play music and listen to music as well as chat. I feel like a 12 year old again. I am neglecting my sleep and productivity with goals of becoming one of those creepy intimidating gorillas. It's quite elementary but amazingly radical at the same time. For a while I was getting scared and jaded that music was getting lame but I guess I was just out of the loop. Turntable has renewed my hope. Stay tuned for some gems I discovered on turntable. Okay, so I did remember to write about the Kathleen Hanna documentary that Sini Anderson is making. But they recently did a benefit show in NY where Kathleen announced a revival of The Julie Ruin and the new band is also featuring Kathi Wilcox! Wow!!!!!!! When I saw Kathleen was having that Julie Ruin t-shirt contest, I was hoping something like this was on her mind. Here is a review from BUST and another great one from Star Beat Music. I'm really upset I didn't go to this. Lame Lame Lame. I got to see Kathleen perform a few Julie Ruin songs in 1999 with some of the very early Le Tigre shows and can't wait to see more. don't stop. don't stop. don't stop. Last time The Raincoats came around, I went to NY to see them and wrote about it here. I love love love the Raincoats and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. I was so sad to miss the MOMA show in November 2010. Did anyone go? It was part of the museum's Modern Women initiative, and also included a DJ set by Ms. Kathleen Hanna. You can read about Gina Birch's and Ana da Silva's take on the show here and Kathleen writing about discovering Fairytale in the Supermarket here. I absolutely adore this song also. It makes me feel happy.

I went to a comic book store with a friend because I've been looking to replace my whole Art Babe comic collection by Jessica Abel. I had every one but lost them in a move. And I found this Runaways comic by Blue Water comics. It's one of those Rock N Roll Comics and I think it's unofficial. It came out June 2010. Always funny when I find something of interest in a comic book store. I used to go to comic book stores all the time in the nineties when they used to sell zines. What comics are you into? Are there any feminist comics that I didn't know about? And please please please get in touch if you can hook me up with Art Babe!

Dear Friends, Fans, and Family:

As some of you already know, I am currently knee-deep in the early stages of directing a documentary film about Kathleen Hanna. It’s a unique opportunity, and an important one. This film is not simply an archive of Kathleen’s impact on our culture as a feminist leader and musician (which could easily be a five-part miniseries).

I am making an intimate portrait of a complex artist and activist that explores where she’s been, where she is now, and where she is going. Inevitably, these questions will engage larger ones about the nature of art and activism, as well as fame, friendship, and community.

When Kathleen and I sat down a few months ago and talked about the film I wanted to make, we both agreed that it should be as ambitious, professional, and as beautiful as possible. Accordingly, I am shooting everything on HD cameras, with the latest technology. I won’t bore you with gibberish about P2 cards, but I can assure you that this stuff is futuristic. It is also very expensive.
Here’s what we have going for us: a kick-ass team of talented, passionate people who are temporarily willing to work for free; the collaboration of our subject, Kathleen; 20 years of archival footage documenting her work, and a clear, inspired vision of what this film will be and why it needs to be made.

Here’s what we don’t have (yet): money. Nonetheless, because we are so confident that this film will find the support it needs, we are already in production, and intend to stick to our current schedule, which has us shooting through the end of the year.
Don’t worry; we aren’t relying on faith alone to finance this film. During our marathon, hummus-fueled meetings in my Bushwick apartment, we have formulated a plan and taken action toward qualifying for non-profit status (we have an interested fiscal sponsor), while remaining eligible for private investors. We have an accomplished grantwriter on the ready. We are in the process of making a teaser video to pitch to potential producers, and a shorter cut to launch on the fundraising site, Kickstarter. However, we are in desperate need of more gigantic hard-drives to store all of our beautiful HD footage, not to mention more P2 cards, sound and lighting equipment, sustenance for our crews (don’t want anybody getting too skinny in the service of good art), media transfers, and lots more.

So this is, in the end, our first request for support (you probably already figured that out, huh?). Very much in the spirit of all independent, grassroots movements (hello, feminism. hi riot grrls. hi underground musicians, artists, and revolutionaries), we need those who support independent art, feminist art, and the documentation of our underground leaders to rally. We want to do this right, so that it's as good as it should be, and reaches the widest audience possible.

Although there are many ways to make money with blogs, I have never used this site to do so. But I am asking for your help. I rescued my dog Foxy four years ago. He was four years old and had already had four other homes because of a lot of issues with separation anxiety and house breaking, but I refused to give up on the lil bugger! On Monday March 22 the Japan Night Tour will be gracing Boston, and they've included some girl music in their lineup. The show's at T.T. The Bear's and the first 100 people to show up will get a Japan Night Sampler CD. This is super in advance but Stereo Total are playing at the Middle East on August 26 too. I've seen them a bajillion times and really love them. I know bands can't be at 100% all the time but last time I saw them they weren't as energetic, and it kinda bummed me out (is Boston the end of the tour?) I have hope that it will be awesome like the other times though.

I really love the spring and summer because there are so many more shows. Oh yeah and I can't remember the last time I was so excited to see a movie, since the Runaways movie on April 9!

However, The Guardian gave Courtney a surprisingly good review for her recent show. Wanna know what Courtney's been up to? Make All-Ages Music Happen in Every Town

I was luckyluckylucky to grow up right outside of Boston. Starting in 7th grade I was able to go to all-ages shows (at a few clubs, churches, community centers, VFW's, in basements & even an occasional barn.) Unfortunately that doesn't happen everywhere, and even now in Boston most of those venues are gone. I remember being sooo devestated when the Foxboro Community Center stopped letting us have shows there. So please vote here everyday to help AMP (All Ages Music Project) get a $50,000 grant from Pepsi's Refresh Everything Campaign!

The world has lost a great poet, Ms. Lucille Clifton, who passed away on February 13. I've always admired her because she had such a powerful voice. If you don't know her work, please check it out. Don't just take my word for it, Lucille Clifton won an Emmy Award, a Lannan Literary Award, two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Shelley Memorial Award, the YM-YWHA Poetry Center Discovery Award, and the 2007 Ruth Lilly Prize (just to name some of her honors.)

"Inger did contribute lyrics, we were very close at the time. I wrote the song with my sister Lori, and when Inger recorded it with Jeff, she added some lyrics to the second verse. But its true, it's a Pendulum Floors song that was NEVER recorded (other than a acoustic version for copyright.) We are currently working on a version in our home studio-kinda cosmic? When its done I'll let you know. Keep up the great work with Grrrlsounds. I'm a old riotgrrrl myself!"

Yard of Blonde Girls

Wow, nursing school is keeping me much busier than I could have ever imagined. Working full time and being a full time student is hard. And I can't deal what's on the terrestrial radio so I've been finding myself listening to classical music for the first time in my life! When I actually remember to grab a CD or Ipod for the commute, I've been listening to pretty low key stuff to ease my anxiety. Lots of Jeff Buckley this week, which reminds me that I should write about Inger Lorre and the Nymphs!

I always thought Jeff Buckley and Inger Lorre co-wrote Yard of Blonde Girls (below) but according to Wikipedia it was originally written by Audrey Clark and Lori Kramer, Boston sisters who made up The Pendulum Floors. They released A Kicking Good Time With The Pendulum Floors on Villa Villakula. I wonder if this song is on it? They were also in the 360s and the Paper Squares. Audrey is now in Thee Flakes, check them out, they're good! So funny that this song originally started in Boston! I'd love to hear the original version. The song is magical. It is one of my favorites. It sounds like a very important and vivid dream.

Inger Lorre was the singer of The Nymphs, and released this on her solo album, Transcendental Meditation in 1999.

I've always been fascinated by Inger Lorre. She is talented, creative, rebellious and interesting, check out this interview with her to see for yourself! And here is Imitating Angels from The Nymphs 1991 album. According to her Twitter, she is going to play a secret show at the Viper Room in late February.

Gaby Moreno and Ani Difranco at Showcase Live 1/30/10

Gaby Moreno opened up the show, playing some pop songs in Spanish and English. She had a beautiful, soulful voice that kind of reminded me of Fiona Apple. She (as well as her bassist and drummer) seemed so joyful playing. I really love watching bands play who look like they love what they're doing! It bums me out when the musicians look bored or apathetic. She has a debut album, Still the Unknown, which is available on her website. My only complaint was that her set was very short.

It's been about a decade since I've seen Ani Difranco live. When I was young I saw her a million times (okay, somewhere over 20 I lost count.) The music was much lower key than most of the things I listened to at the time, but I felt so connected to her outspoken ways, her politics, her rage, her poetry. So when I saw she was coming to a new venue, Showcase Live in Foxboro, I had to check out the show. I'm glad I did because I remembered what I loved so much about this fierce woman.

First of all, she played a very passionate performance. At some points she looked like she was going to cry, and even mumbled something to the effect of "why am I playing this song?" My thoughts--better to play it and get it out of you, than to keep it festering inside! At other times she looked so joyful. Her emotions and connections to her songs were really beautiful to observe.

Her banter included saying hello to "Massahugetits" (I've never heard that one!), wanting to impeach Republican Senators, whisper in Barack's ear and show up in his dreams, and talks about her "Babydaddy."
As always, she had a great sense of humor. She made fun of herself (and past relationships) and said that no one should practice monogamy until their first gray hair, because it just doesn't work, before playing the new song Promiscuity. She played several other new, unreleased songs, as well as Garden and She Says.

She dedicated a song (that always reminds her of Utah Phillips) to Howard Zinn, and talked about calling him up to write linear notes for one of her albums. She also talked about playing the song Whose Side Are You On (below) for Pete Seeger's Birthday.

Someone in the audience yelled "play something from Dilate" so the encore consisted of Shameless and Untouchable Face, which I was very pleased to hear, as this was the first Ani album I ever bought. All in all, a great venue (1050 capacity) and a great show. And it was also a nice change to be surrounded by 1000 women!

To me it is so much more powerful to hear girls writing about their personal experiences with Riot Grrrl than from a journalist (like the zine Jolie Noggles and Hannah Neurotica did!) but any article I see on the subject I still read it! What do you think?
